Instructions
  1. Combine sugar, milk, corn syrup, and salt in a saucepan.
  2. Cut chocolate in small pieces and add to sugar mixture. Stir over low heat, just until sugar is dissolved.
  3. Bring slowly to boiling; stirring constantly.
  4. Reduce heat to very low and cook without stirring, to 236 degrees on candy thermometer or until a little of the mixture dropped in very cold water forms a soft ball.
  5. During cooking, wipe crystals from sides of pan with a wet cheesecloth wrapped around a fork; do not stir mixture.
  6. Re- move from heat.
  7. Put butter and vanilla on top of mixture; let cool undisturbed until pan feels lukewarm.
  8. Beat until very thick.
  9. Stir in nuts. Continue stirring until fudge is very stiff.
  10. Turn at once, into buttered 8- x8- x2-inch pan.
  11. Cut into squares while still warm.
