1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a skillet, sauté cabbage in butter.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until crumbly, stirring constantly; drain. Season to taste; cool. In a bowl, dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water; let stand for 5 minutes.
  3. Add milk, shortening, and flour; mix well. Knead on floured surface until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place in greased bowl, turning to grease surface. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes, or until doubled in bulk.
  5. Roll into 1/4-inch thick rectangle on floured surface. Cut into eight 5-inch squares.
  6. Place 2 heaping tablespoons beef mixture on each square. Bring corners up to enclose filling; press edges to seal. Place seam side down on greased baking sheet.
  7. Let rise for 20 minutes. Bake for 30 minutes. Makes 8 servings.
