QUILTS OF VALOR QUILT SHOW SEPTEMBER 8TH
The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing The Burlington Quilts of Valor Quilters, started in May, 2017, sponsored by the Burlington Hotel and Quilt Shop of Alma, was the goal of Cheryl Benusa, a mother and grandmother of combat veterans. Cheryl made many quilts prior to the organization of our local group and gave them to various groups for distribution to veterans. Her dream was to make it possible for our veterans in Buffalo County to be awarded a patriotic quilt, to thank and honor the veteran for his or her service, sacrifice, and valor in serving our nation. Cheryl passed away later in 2017, pleased that her mission was being carried on by the now 18 members of the Burlington Quilts of Valor. Her husband, Michael, supported her fully in this endeavor and after she passed donated many of her quilting fabrics and supplies to our local group, as well as giving us a generous financial contribution to continue this program. The quilts can be patriotic colors but are not required to be; the size is generally 60 x 80. It is a pleasure to see the veterans honored in this way and it is a joy for them to be recognized, wapped in love, and appreciated for their service.
The Quilts of Valor is a nationwide organization, begun in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, when her son was deployed in Iraq. The first quilt given was to a soldier from MN at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The group has awarded 184,887 quilts and the number grows daily.
