Experience the vibrant, modern-day culture of Norway through an afternoon of authentic food, music, and drink.
As Leif Erikson Day approaches on October 9, six local organizations are joining together to celebrate the rich Norwegian heritage that has shaped our region and defined our stories. Visitors will have an opportunity to experience the food, music, history, and traditions that continue to shape our community when the public is invited to “A Taste of Norway” on Saturday, October 3, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the historic Country Coon Prairie Church.
The Coon Valley Historical Society, Country Coon Prairie Church Preservation, Inc., Norskedalen Nature & Heritage Center, Vernon County Historical Society, Westby Area Historical Society, and Westby Sons of Norway Solvang Lodge #457 have partnered to offer an enjoyable afternoon highlighting the history, traditions, and culture of Norwegian immigration in our area. Each organization will present its own unique perspective while sharing information about its mission, programs, and activities.
Guests will enjoy twelve sweet and savory sample tastings inspired by the fresh, flavorful cuisine of modern Norway. Adult attendees may sample Norwegian beer with proof of age, while orange “brus” (like the popular Norwegian soft drink), coffee, and water will also be available for those preferring non-alcoholic beverages.
Throughout the afternoon, visitors will have the opportunity to explore exhibits, visit with representatives from each organization, and participate in educational displays and hands-on activities. Designed for all ages, the event offers something for everyone – from history enthusiasts to families with children looking for a fun and engaging afternoon.
Adding to the authentic Norwegian experience, accomplished musician Eden Ehm of Decorah, Iowa, will perform traditional music on the Hardanger fiddle in the church sanctuary. Between selections, she will share the history of this uniquely Norwegian instrument, tell stories about its traditions, and answer questions from attendees. Her presentation promises to be a memorable highlight of the day.
The historic Country Coon Prairie Church is located at S2706 Coon Prairie Road, just one mile south of Westby. Please note that visitors must be able to navigate six to seven steps at a time to access either the upper or lower level of the building.
Admission is free, and everyone is welcome. Proof of age will be required to receive a beer sampling card. A suggested donation of $10 per person is appreciated to help support the participating organizations and future educational programming. Come taste the flavors, music, history, and traditions of Norway while celebrating the remarkable heritage that continues to enrich our community.
